Argungu town in Kebbi State came alive on Saturday as the 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival commenced at the historic Mata Fada fishing arena, attracting tens of thousands of fishermen, tourists and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond. According to Ireporter Online, the colourful event, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most celebrated cultural festivals, opened amid heightened anticipation and a massive turnout of participants.

What was scheduled to be a meticulously coordinated opening ceremony briefly took an unexpected turn shortly after midday when a large number of the estimated 40,000 registered fishermen surged into the river ahead of the formal commencement and before the arrival of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the charged atmosphere and palpable excitement among participants triggered the spontaneous dash into the water.

Spectators who had gathered as early as 7:00 a.m. watched in astonishment as men wielding traditional fishing tools leapt into the river in a dramatic display of strength, agility and competitive zeal, momentarily interrupting the official programme. Correspondents at the scene described thunderous cheers from the riverbanks as the water churned with activity, creating a spectacle that underscored the festival’s enduring appeal.

Security personnel deployed to maintain order were briefly stretched by the sheer size of the crowd and the intensity of the moment. However, normalcy was restored after approximately 30 minutes as operatives guided the enthusiastic fishermen out of the river and re-established control of the arena, allowing the formal proceedings to continue.

Historical records show that the Argungu Fishing Festival dates back to 1934 and traces its deeper roots to an earlier tradition introduced to commemorate peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom. Over the decades, it has evolved into a globally recognised cultural celebration that transcends fishing.
