According to Ireporter Online, security operatives under Operation Whirl Stroke have apprehended two herders in Makurdi, Benue State, for allegedly destroying crops on community farmlands during the harvest season. The arrests, confirmed in a statement by the operation’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, took place on November 20, 2025, during routine patrols aimed at safeguarding farmlands and supporting food security efforts.

Zubairu explained that troops deployed to the Zongo Akiki axis were conducting a scheduled patrol when they intercepted the herders. The suspects were said to have led their cattle into cultivated farmlands, resulting in damage to crops belonging to local residents. He noted that the timely response of the troops prevented the situation from escalating into a confrontation between the herders and the affected farmers.

The operation spokesperson added that the suspects have been detained pending further investigation and the commencement of appropriate legal action. He emphasised that the intervention was crucial in averting possible unrest within the community.

Speaking further on the development, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, commended the soldiers for their professionalism and cautioned residents against resorting to self-help in moments of conflict. He warned that retaliation or reprisal attacks would only heighten tensions and undermine ongoing peace efforts.

Major General Gara also called on herders to operate within the confines of the law, stressing that acts capable of destroying livelihoods, such as trespassing on farmlands, would not be condoned. He reiterated that protecting farmers and strengthening food security remain central to the mandate of the Operation, especially at the height of the harvest period. The Force Commander assured that increased surveillance and continuous patrols will be maintained across communities to ensure peace and stability.
