Bauchi Emirate Council Takes Action Against APC Senator for Criticizing Governor

Bauchi Emirate Council has stripped Senator Shehu Buba Umar of his traditional title, ‘Mandarin Bauchi’. This decision follows allegations that Umar, who represents Bauchi South senatorial district in the National Assembly, insulted Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.

The controversy began after Senator Umar, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accused Governor Mohammed of mismanaging palliative items intended to ease economic difficulties in the state. During a press briefing last week, Umar alleged that these supplies, provided by the APC-led federal government, were sold by the state government rather than distributed to the public as intended.

In response to these accusations, the Bauchi Emirate Council convened a meeting on August 14, 2024, to address the matter. The council’s decision to revoke Umar’s traditional title was based on the claim that his actions were inconsistent with the values and traditions upheld by the Emirate.

This development highlights the ongoing tension between political figures and traditional institutions in Nigeria, underscoring the significant impact of political disputes on traditional roles and titles.
