Bode George to Atiku: Time to Step Aside for Younger Leadership in 2027
Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his ambition to run for the presidency in 2027. George, in a recent statement, emphasized that the time has come for younger leaders to take the reins of power in Nigeria, aligning with a broader vision for the country’s future.
Atiku, who was the PDP Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, was defeated by President Bola Tinubu. George pointed out that by 2027, Atiku will be 81 years old, suggesting that it would be an appropriate moment for him to follow the example of U.S. President Joe Biden, who advocates for empowering the younger generation.
“I have nothing personal against Alhaji Abubakar. He is my friend, but the truth must be told,” George remarked. “By 2027, by God’s grace, I will also be in my 80s. This is the time for us to embrace a new generation of leaders.”
George also highlighted the importance of respecting the regional balance in leadership, stating that a Southerner should occupy the office of President and Commander-in-Chief from 2023 to 2031, in line with the PDP’s constitution and the political realities of Nigeria.
This statement from George could signal a shift within the PDP as the party looks ahead to the next election cycle, with potential implications for the political landscape in Nigeria.
