Borno Youths Clash in Shani Over Marriage Proposal

A violent clash erupted in Shani Local Government Area of Borno State after a young man, Mamaru from Kubo community, visited Bargu village on June 11, 2025, to propose marriage to 17-year-old Babaliya Hassan.

Sequence of Events:

• Babaliya celebrated the proposal with a mat laid in front of her father’s house.

• Some Bargu youths objected to a non-native marrying a girl from their village.

• The confrontation led to tension; Mamaru and his friends left the area, leaving behind their mats.

• When they returned to retrieve the mats, Babaliya allegedly attacked Muhammad Isa with a pestle, seriously injuring him. Another, Shuaibu Ali, sustained minor injuries.

• The next day (Bargu market day), the situation escalated:

  • Kubo youths allegedly stormed Bargu on motorcycles seeking revenge.

  • Friday Lado, a Bargu resident, was attacked, and his motorcycle was set ablaze.

  • Six motorcycles were reportedly seized by Bargu youths.

  • A woman, Rukayya Buba, was also injured.

Security Response:

• The Borno State Police Command deployed a crack squad to restore order.

• Injured persons were treated at Shani General Hospital.

• Seized motorcycles were moved to the Shani Divisional Police Office for safekeeping.

This incident highlights ongoing communal tensions tied to marriage customs, identity, and territorial loyalty in parts of northern Nigeria.
