Breaking: Court Issues Restraining Order Against Aneibonam Faction’s NNPP Congress
The crisis within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) took a dramatic turn on Thursday as the FCT High Court issued a restraining order against the Dr. Boniface Aneibonam faction. as official members of the party and from holding congresses or a national convention.
According to the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson, the court order, numbered FCT/HC/CV/5518/2024, prohibits Aneibonam and his supporters, as well as their agents, from carrying out any official activities in the name of the NNPP. Furthermore, the court has also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to refrain from engaging with the faction or monitoring any unauthorized congresses they may hold.
Johnson expressed relief at the ruling, explaining that Dr. Aneibonam and his supporters were expelled for allegedly collaborating with opposition parties and confusing the public about the true leadership and identity of the NNPP. He urged the public to remain patient as the party works to end the illegal activities of the faction in court.
In response, Agbo Major, the national chairman of the Aneibonam faction, dismissed the injunction, claiming they were unaware of any such court order. He confidently stated that their congresses, which began on January 13, were proceeding without any issues. When questioned about the potential impact of the injunction on the morale of his faction, he downplayed it, asserting that the injunction from non-party members held no relevance for them.
The crisis within the party escalated after the 2023 general elections when the NNPP’s Board of Trustees, led by Boniface Aneibonam, expelled presidential candidate and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso over alleged anti-party activities. The rift deepened following Kwankwaso’s visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, which led to rumors that Kwankwaso sought a ministerial position.
In retaliation, a faction loyal to Kwankwaso, backed by the Kwankwasiya movement, expelled National Publicity Secretary Major Gilbert Agbo and suspended Aneibonam, who had founded the party. Agbo later emerged as the leader of the faction loyal to Kwankwaso.
Despite a ruling by Justice Usman Mallam Na’abba of the Kano State High Court that set aside Kwankwaso’s suspension, the dispute within the NNPP continued to simmer. The Kwankwaso faction distanced itself from the party’s national leadership and held its own national convention in April 2024, where Ajuji Ahmed was appointed as acting national chairman. This convention saw the approval of the party’s new constitution, slogan, and logo.
The Agbo-led faction has accused INEC of supporting the Kwankwaso faction, particularly after its officials attended the Abuja convention.
As the legal battle rages on, both factions are digging in their heels, with the future of the party hanging in the balance.
