BREAKING: Finance Ministry Bows to Pressure, Promises Payment of Arrears in 48 Hours!

Following a protest staged by members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), the Federal Ministry of Finance has pledged to release all outstanding payments within 48 hours.

The demonstrators, who converged at the ministry on Tuesday, demanded the immediate disbursement of unpaid pension arrears, allowances, and other entitlements — particularly those owed to staff under the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA).

Speaking during the protest, TUC Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, explained that the delay was due to the ministry’s decision to withhold the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the NNRA, which is used to pay salaries and pensions.

“We’re here over the withheld IGR due to the NNRA, and it’s puzzling because others in the same sector have already received their payments. Pensioners and staff rely on this IGR for their livelihoods. When it’s withheld, salaries and pensions are delayed,” Toro said.

He further noted the harsh economic impact of such delays, stating, “The current minimum wage of N70,000 has already been eroded by inflation and rising living costs. Failure to pay salaries on time only worsens the burden on workers.”

Although the protest was not officially concluded, Toro announced a temporary suspension in anticipation of government action, expected by Wednesday, May 21, 2024.

“The Honourable Minister of Finance has today graciously approved the release of the funds. The Permanent Secretary assured us that this approval will soon be reflected in actual payments. For now, we’ll return to strategize and monitor the situation,” he added.

Addressing the protesters, Permanent Secretary for Special Duties, Raymond Omachi, confirmed that their concerns had been communicated to the Minister.

“I’ve spoken directly with the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Approval has been given to ensure that your demands are met. Within the next 48 hours, you’ll begin receiving your payments.

“We appreciate your cooperation in allowing us to return to our offices to facilitate this process. Your voices have been heard, and we won’t let you down,” Omachi assured.
