Brewery Firm Secures Major Brand Acquisition, Sets Sights On Africa Expansion
Champion Breweries Plc has successfully completed the acquisition of the Bullet brand portfolio from Sun Mark, marking a significant step in its strategic drive to become a diversified, pan-African beverage company. According to industry reports, the deal grants Champion full ownership of Bullet’s brand assets, trademarks, formulations, and commercial rights through an asset carve-out arrangement. The assets are now held in a newly established entity in the Netherlands, where Champion holds a majority stake and Vinar N.V., Sun Mark’s majority shareholder, retains a minority interest.
The acquisition, first announced in August, was facilitated by Champion’s successful capital-raising initiatives, including a Rights Issue and Public Offer, which strengthened its balance sheet and provided funding for continental expansion. Chairman Imo-Abasi Jacob described the completion of the acquisition and public equity raises as a defining moment for the company. He emphasized that shareholder and investor support reflected confidence in Champion’s long-term strategy to build a high-growth beverage platform across Africa, while committing to disciplined execution, seamless integration, and sustained value creation.
Champion Breweries acknowledged the guidance and support of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigerian Exchange Group, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Akwa Ibom State, as well as its financial and legal advisers, capital market partners, and professional consultants, which ensured smooth execution of the deal.
The Bullet brand is distributed across 14 African markets, giving Champion an established footprint beyond Nigeria in the ready-to-drink alcoholic and energy drink segments. The acquisition enhances the company’s addressable market, strengthens revenue streams, and leverages a portfolio with strong consumer loyalty. Bullet Black is recognized in Nigeria’s alcoholic beverage sector, while Bullet Blue has established a presence in energy drinks across multiple African countries.
The acquisition positions Champion to increase foreign exchange earnings, expand distribution across Africa, and benefit from supply chain efficiencies. Its structure allows rapid integration without major upfront manufacturing investment, while paving the way for potential Nigerian production capacity that could transform the country into a regional export hub. Financial advisory and legal support for the transaction were provided by leading firms, including Rand Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, Banwo & Ighodalo, and several joint issuing houses and banking partners.
