CAN Slams Ini Edo Over Controversial A Very Dirty Christmas Movie Title, Demands Apology

According to Ireporter Online, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed strong objections to the title of the upcoming Nollywood movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, calling it offensive to Christian beliefs. The association stated that the title contradicts the sacred meaning of Christmas, a period commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ and symbolizing peace, love, and purity.

CAN emphasized that associating the holy season with the word “dirty” diminishes its spiritual significance and risks turning a solemn religious celebration into something irreverent. While recognizing the importance of artistic freedom, the association insisted that such liberties should be exercised responsibly, especially in Nigeria’s religiously diverse society.

The group also raised concerns that the film’s title appeared to have been approved for public release without adequate oversight from regulatory authorities. CAN called on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to clarify how the title received approval, particularly during the festive season.

Additionally, the association urged professional bodies in the film industry, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), to adopt clear guidelines for the respectful use of religious themes and symbols in cinematic works. CAN requested that the movie’s producer, Ini Edo, reconsider the title, issue an apology, and ensure that future projects approach sacred subjects with sensitivity.

The association warned that in a period marked by moral and social challenges, actions that belittle sacred traditions could exacerbate divisions and undermine mutual respect among communities.
