Canada Returnee Arrested for Assaulting KAI Officer in Lagos Expressway Drama

The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of Mr. Morufudeen Idowu, a 52-year-old man recently returned from Canada, for allegedly assaulting an official of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI. The incident occurred during an enforcement exercise in the Ojota area of Lagos.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, the suspect was apprehended after resisting arrest for unlawfully crossing the expressway. The altercation reportedly escalated into physical assault on the KAI officer.

Following the incident, Idowu was taken into custody at the KAI command center in Oshodi. The Commissioner stated that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant laws of Lagos State.

In a related development, Wahab disclosed that 23 other individuals were arrested during a dawn sanitation enforcement operation near the railway line in the Isokoko area. The suspects were caught in the act of indiscriminately dumping waste into drainage channels—an offense the Commissioner described as a significant contributor to the city’s persistent flooding problems.

Wahab noted that the arrests were made possible through tip-offs from concerned residents, whose cooperation, he said, was crucial in supporting the state’s ongoing environmental reforms. He reiterated the government’s determination to pursue legal actions against those who violate public sanitation laws.

During the same enforcement drive, two individuals were arrested for open defecation along the Agege Motor Road, close to the railway line. In addition, eight others were apprehended for open urination at various locations, including Allen Avenue, Opebi, and Governor’s Road in Alausa.

All suspects are currently in custody and will be charged under Lagos State’s environmental protection laws. The Commissioner stressed that the government remains committed to strict enforcement in order to restore cleanliness and order across the metropolis.
