Catholic Priest Sets Condition For Ini Edo’s Film To Avoid Being Withdrawn Amid CAN’s Objection
A Catholic priest, Fada Oluoma, has offered his perspective on the controversy surrounding Nollywood actress Ini Edo’s latest film, Dirty Christmas, amid calls by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the movie to be withdrawn due to its title.
According to reports, Ini Edo had previously appealed online after CAN threatened to pull the film, arguing that the title supposedly disrespected Christian beliefs. In response, Fada Oluoma stated that while it is understandable for religious organizations to challenge content they find offensive, such actions should be based on the actual content of the film rather than its title alone.
The priest emphasized that since Ini Edo has asserted that the movie does not demean Christianity and has invited critics to highlight any offensive scenes, CAN should first review the film and evaluate its message. He further argued that a film should not face cancellation merely because of its title, particularly given the considerable resources invested in its production.
Fada Oluoma also clarified that decisions about censorship or the withdrawal of movies fall within the jurisdiction of Nigeria’s official film and censorship authorities, not religious bodies. He advised that unless a movie breaches national ethical or regulatory standards, it should be allowed to continue showing.
While praising CAN for defending Christian values, the priest criticized the association for remaining silent on what he considers more serious issues within the faith, including unverified prophecies, fake miracles, and the exploitation of worshippers by certain church leaders. He urged the organization to focus on these challenges, which he described as more harmful to Christianity than a film title.
