Children In Lagos Don’t Behave Like This” — Kemi Badenoch Criticises UK Crime Approach
According to Ireporter Online, the Leader of the UK Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised the Labour-led government’s approach to tackling crime, arguing that Britain has become too lenient in dealing with offenders, particularly young people.
In an opinion piece published in the Daily Mail UK, Badenoch contrasted the UK’s handling of youth crime with what she described as stricter social discipline in countries like Nigeria and Kenya. She claimed that in Nigeria, young people face clear consequences for wrongdoing, while suggesting that the UK increasingly treats criminal behaviour as something to be explained rather than firmly punished.
She expressed concern over viral footage of youths engaging in daylight shoplifting and vandalism, noting that such behaviour has become increasingly normalised in parts of the UK. According to her, many of the young people involved appear to come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, but she insisted the broader issue is a breakdown in discipline and accountability.
Badenoch further argued that Britain has shifted towards what she described as an overly “therapeutic” approach to social problems, focusing more on welfare support and rehabilitation than enforcement. She maintained that this shift has weakened the justice system and frustrated police officers who repeatedly arrest the same offenders only for them to be released shortly after.
She also raised concerns about illegal migration, referencing the Conservative Party’s controversial Rwanda deportation plan, which she said acted as a deterrent to irregular entry. She argued that scrapping the policy had contributed to an increase in small boat crossings and asylum applications.
Concluding her remarks, Badenoch insisted that the UK’s growing reliance on welfare systems without strict consequences for non-compliance is contributing to social disorder, and she called for stronger enforcement of existing laws.
