Come Back Clean! APC Lays Down Strict Terms For Kwankwaso’s Political Homecoming

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced its readiness to receive Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), along with other potential defectors—but under clear conditions.

Speaking at the APC state secretariat on Friday, the party’s chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, addressed growing rumors that Kwankwaso—leader of a faction recently expelled from the NNPP—might be plotting a return to the APC. Abbas confirmed that arrangements were already underway to welcome defectors, noting that ward chapters had been instructed to open registration for individuals from any political or social background, provided they respect the APC’s constitution.

He stated,

“The APC, under its Renewed Hope Agenda, is actively working to receive decampees from across political parties. We’ve heard the speculation about Senator Kwankwaso’s likely defection. This is a welcome move, considering the APC may be his last viable political refuge, having severed ties with virtually all other political platforms.”

Abbas emphasized that while the party is open to welcoming newcomers, existing structures and constitutionally elected officials will not be displaced.

“We affirm our respect for the constitutional right of all Nigerians to join any political party of their choice. However, we also make it clear that the tenure and positions of our elected party officials at all levels—from ward to state—remain protected and intact,” he said.

He further encouraged all intending members to formally register at their respective ward levels, adding that everyone—whether old or new—will have equal rights in participating in internal party processes, including elections and candidacy, without any undue advantage.

Abbas also issued a subtle warning, saying the APC is aware that some individuals might be attempting to join the party for less noble reasons, such as dodging accountability or reclaiming lost political relevance.

“Some people have run out of political goodwill and become irrelevant in Nigeria’s political landscape. They now view the APC as a lifeline to remain afloat, but we are watching closely.”
