The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, has emphasized the need for local communities to be allowed limited access to firearms as a means of strengthening security at the grassroots level.……READ MORE

Ajayi argued that the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, and other security agencies cannot be present everywhere at all times, making it necessary for communities to serve as the first line of defense against insecurity.

Speaking at the inaugural annual lecture of the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) in Abuja on Thursday, Ajayi stated, “It is unrealistic to expect security agencies to protect every Nigerian. The military and police should focus on tackling organized crime, while communities should have some level of armament to safeguard themselves.”

He further highlighted the challenges security agencies face in deploying personnel to every part of the country and suggested that empowering communities with controlled access to weapons could help combat local threats more effectively.
