Complete List: IGP Tunji Disu Constitutes 8-Member Committee On State Police
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member steering committee on State Police, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s security reform agenda. According to Ireporter Online, the inauguration took place during Disu’s first formal conference with senior police officers at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The conference brought together strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force for high-level discussions on institutional priorities and national security imperatives. It represented the first official engagement between the Inspector-General and the senior leadership cadre since his assumption of office.
During the event, IGP Disu described the establishment of the State Police Steering Committee as a timely and important initiative in light of evolving security challenges across the federation. He emphasized that the committee’s work is aimed at enhancing security governance, fostering community participation in crime prevention, and bringing policing closer to the people.
The committee has been tasked with reviewing existing policing models both domestically and internationally, assessing community security needs, proposing an operational framework for State Police structures, and addressing recruitment, training, and resource allocation issues. It will also develop accountability and oversight mechanisms to ensure professionalism and public trust.
IGP Disu clarified that the introduction of State Police is not intended to replace the Nigeria Police Force but to complement it within a coordinated national security system, strengthening national cohesion and institutional efficiency.
The Steering Committee is chaired by Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General of the National Institute for Police Studies, Jabi, Abuja, with CP Bode Ojajuni serving as Secretary. Members include DCP Okebechi Agora, DCP Suleyman Gulma, ACP Ikechukwu Okafor, CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho, and CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd), Provost of the Police Public Relations School.
