Cooking Gas Price Update: How Much It Costs Per Kg In Nigeria Now

According to Ireporter Online, Nigerians may experience additional economic pressure following a recent hike in domestic gas prices, a move that could impact electricity tariffs, manufacturing costs, and the overall cost of living.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced on Tuesday that the Domestic Base Price of natural gas has been increased to $2.18 per MMBtu, effective April 1, 2026, up from $2.13/MMBtu in 2025. Although the rise is modest—about five cents, or roughly 2.35 per cent—analysts warn that it could trigger significant ripple effects across multiple sectors of the economy.

The regulatory body stated that the adjustment was carried out in accordance with the Petroleum Industry Act, current gas pricing regulations, and prevailing market conditions. Gas is a critical input for electricity generation and industrial production, meaning the price change may lead to higher operational costs for businesses and service providers.

Energy experts have cautioned that the adjustment could eventually translate into increased electricity tariffs and production costs, potentially passed on to consumers. This development may further exacerbate the financial strain on households already grappling with rising food prices, transportation expenses, and inflationary pressures.

Market data also indicates that the price of liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) has risen to approximately ₦1,150 per kilogram. Based on this average, refilling common cylinder sizes now costs around ₦3,450 for 3kg, ₦5,750 for 5kg, ₦11,500 for 10kg, ₦13,800 for 12kg, and ₦14,375 for 12.5kg.

With gas serving as a major energy source for power plants, households, and industrial operations, the latest price adjustments are expected to influence electricity generation costs, cooking gas prices, and production expenses across the country.
