Cost Of Cooking Gas Explodes Nationwide—Relief Expected Soon, Says Marketers

According to Ireporter Online, the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has witnessed a steep increase across Nigeria as of late October and early November 2025, worsening the economic strain on households already grappling with inflation and a rising cost of living.

Market reports indicate that a standard 12.5 kg cylinder of cooking gas now sells between ₦15,000 and ₦16,500 in several cities, while the price per kilogram has surged to between ₦2,500 and ₦3,000 in some urban areas, including Lagos.

Industry observers attribute the sharp rise to a combination of supply constraints, currency depreciation, and transportation challenges. The Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), the country’s leading LPG producer, reportedly scaled down supply following maintenance activities at its Bonny Island facility, resulting in reduced domestic availability. Furthermore, a recent strike action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) disrupted loading and distribution operations, compounding the supply situation.

In addition, the continuous weakening of the naira has inflated the cost of imported LPG components, while high diesel prices and poor road infrastructure have further driven up transportation and distribution expenses.

Experts note that the government’s ongoing campaign for cleaner cooking energy has also intensified demand for LPG. However, Nigeria’s limited bottling, storage, and distribution infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing consumption levels, creating a structural imbalance that continues to push prices upward.

Despite the current challenges, the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has assured the public that the scarcity and high prices may ease by the weekend as supply gradually stabilizes.
