Court Remands Kano Based Blogger Over Alleged Defamation Of Buratai

Buratai

The AKano State High Court, presided over by Justice Halima A.B. Wali, has ordered that Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu, a self-proclaimed internet blogger, be remanded in the correctional center for alleged defamation of the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd).

Danshagamu, the defendant, was hauled before the High Court for allegedly sharing a video footage on social media in which he claimed that the plaintiff used the proceeds of an arms deal to build over 60 filling stations in Kano.

Following the distribution of the aforementioned video footage, the plaintiff, a former Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, directed the Police to locate the defendant in order to investigate the claims.

Barrister S.A. Abdullahi, the defendant’s counsel, requested bail for his client, but the presiding judge denied it on the grounds that the defendant’s offense violated sections 371 and 115, which could result in three years in prison.

The judge also ordered that the defendant be referred to the state’s psychiatrist to determine whether he was in a normal state of mind when he shared the video clips in question.

Barrister Hussaini Makari, the plaintiff’s counsel, told reporters shortly after the court session that his client had also issued a challenge that if the defendant or any Kano State-based citizen could point out any filling station belonging to him, he was willing to drop the case against the defendant.
