“DaGrin Still Inspires Me” – Olamide Opens Up On How Late Rap Icon Fuels His Creativity

Nigerian rap sensation Olamide has revealed how the late DaGrin remains a major source of inspiration in his musical journey. According to Ireporter Online, the YBNL boss spoke fondly about DaGrin’s lasting impact on Nigerian hip-hop, describing the late rapper’s 2009 album C.E.O as a timeless masterpiece that continues to motivate him and countless others.

In a viral video making rounds on social media, Olamide said C.E.O stands as one of the few rap albums that people in the South-West can recite word for word, emphasizing its deep cultural connection and influence. He explained that whenever he experiences creative blocks, listening to DaGrin’s music reignites his passion and reminds him of the strength of indigenous rap.

Olamide was quoted as saying, “DaGrin’s C.E.O album is a timeless project. That’s the only rap album almost everybody in the South-West can sing word for word. DaGrin influenced a lot of rappers; whenever we need motivation, we go back and listen to his album.”

DaGrin, whose real name was Oladapo Olaonipekun, tragically passed away in a car crash in April 2010, but his legacy continues to shape Nigerian rap. His C.E.O album is widely regarded as a landmark project that pioneered the fusion of Yoruba, Pidgin, and English in hip-hop, laying the foundation for a new generation of indigenous rappers.

Meanwhile, Olamide also stated that he is not desperate for international recognition. Speaking in a recent interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, the award-winning artist explained that his primary focus remains on connecting with his core audience, adding that global acclaim will naturally follow when the time is right.
