Dangote Appoints Former CBN Chief To Lead Economic Strategy

According to Ireporter Online, the Dangote Group has announced the appointment of Dr. Mahmud Hassan, a respected economist and former Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as its new Group Chief Economist.

The appointment, disclosed in a statement issued on Monday, is aimed at strengthening the conglomerate’s economic advisory framework at a time of heightened volatility in both global and domestic markets. Dr. Hassan is expected to provide strategic economic guidance across the Group’s wide-ranging business interests.

In his new role, Dr. Hassan will report directly to the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, and will act as the principal adviser on economic strategy, market dynamics, and policy-related matters affecting the organisation.

Dr. Hassan brings more than three decades of experience spanning economic policy development, financial sector regulation, and central banking. During his career at the CBN, he held several senior positions, including Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Director of the Monetary Policy Department, Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee, and Special Assistant on Economic Policy and Research to the CBN Governor.

He holds a PhD in Economics and a Master’s degree in Energy Economics and Policy from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His academic and professional training also includes studies at the Harvard Kennedy School, alongside certifications as a Bank Examiner and an AML/CFT Analyst.

Beyond his corporate and regulatory experience, Dr. Hassan has contributed significantly to regional economic integration efforts. He has served as a lead consultant to the African Union Commission on trade integration initiatives and the establishment of the African Monetary Fund. He is also a visiting professor at several Nigerian universities and currently serves as President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics.
