step in decentralizing the Nigerian electricity sector.

NERC made this announcement on its social media platform on Monday, highlighting the transfer of oversight to 10 additional states as of January 10, 2025. The commission noted that the transition will empower these states to manage and regulate their electricity markets independently.

The move comes as a result of the 2023 Electricity Act, which redefines the structure and operation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) that has been in place since 2013. With the successful transfer of regulatory authority to four states, NERC aims to further adjust market structures across the nation.

In 2025, the remaining six states—Oyo, Edo, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun, and Niger—will also integrate their sub-companies to reshape the electricity market.
