Delta Exodus Sparks Alarm – Sowunmi Tells Obi: PDP Needs You Now More Than Ever!”

A key figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has renewed his appeal for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to return to the PDP, especially in light of the wave of defections currently rocking the party in Delta State.
Sowunmi’s renewed call comes as the PDP gears up for the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that Obi’s return could significantly bolster the party’s chances of unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that the PDP played a crucial role in Peter Obi’s rise to national prominence.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television on Thursday, Sowunmi said:
“Peter is our contribution to the national political scene. Before joining the PDP, he was with a smaller party, APGA. We brought him in, gave him a role as an adviser to President Jonathan, and later elevated him to vice presidential candidate in 2019 alongside Atiku. That’s what propelled him onto the national stage.”
Sowunmi underscored that Obi’s subsequent recognition and political momentum were largely facilitated by the PDP, which gave him the platform to become a national figure.
Reflecting on Obi’s impressive showing in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, Sowunmi acknowledged the former PDP stalwart’s performance, saying:
“Now that he’s gone on to contest for president, we all see the numbers he pulled. It’s up to him now. But if we hadn’t given him that opportunity, would anyone have known what Peter could achieve?”
He stressed that PDP cannot afford disunity going into the 2027 polls and called for consolidation among opposition forces to avoid another electoral loss.
“We can’t walk into another election fragmented. Unity is our best shot at defeating the APC,” he warned.
Sowunmi’s plea is part of a broader strategy to reunite and strengthen the PDP as it braces for a highly competitive 2027 race. With internal instability and a string of defections threatening the party’s cohesion, he believes Peter Obi’s return would significantly reinforce its ranks and rally disillusioned supporters.
