Democracy Day Lecture – Minister of Regional Development , Momoh Calls for Deepened Reforms Across Nigeria

On the sidelines of the 2025 Democracy Day Public Lecture held at the State House Conference Centre, the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr Abubakar Momoh FNSE added his voice to the national conversation on sustaining Nigeria’s democratic journey through enduring reforms.

Themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” the event was headlined by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and delivered a powerful keynote address. In his remarks, the Vice President reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to democratic consolidation through institutional strengthening, electoral integrity, and national cohesion.

But beyond the high-level keynote, the Honourable Minister of Regional Development brought the discussion closer to the grassroots. Speaking to reporters after the event, he emphasized that democracy must be felt at the community level, through equitable regional development and inclusive infrastructure.

“Reforms are not just about policy—they are about people,” the Minister said.
“From the creeks of the Niger Delta to the drylands of the North, we must ensure that the dividends of democracy reach every region of this country. That’s the kind of enduring reform we are committed to.”

The Minister noted that his ministry is already aligning its development agenda with the administration’s Renewed Hope blueprint, focusing on:

• Accelerating rural infrastructure,

• Empowering local governance structures, and

• Bridging development gaps across geopolitical zones.

He commended the Vice President’s call for lasting reforms and pledged to translate those national aspirations into visible results across Nigeria’s regions.

As the nation marks another Democracy Day, the Honourable Minister reaffirmed that regional development is the strongest proof that democracy is working—and his ministry will continue to play a central role in making that vision a reality.
