EFCC Cases Against Malami Reassigned By Justice Tsoho

According to Ireporter Online, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, has reassigned two high-profile cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to a new judge. The cases have now been transferred to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who has scheduled proceedings to begin on February 27.

The reassignment follows the withdrawal of Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who had recused himself from the matters on February 12, citing personal reasons and the interest of justice. Previously, the cases were handled by Justice Emeka Nwite during the court’s vacation period before being reassigned to Egwuatu. Upon his withdrawal, the case files were returned to the Chief Judge for reassignment.

The EFCC is prosecuting Malami on a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering. In December 2025, the agency revealed that it had traced assets valued at N212 billion to the former AGF, which reportedly include hotels, residential buildings, schools, land, and a printing press located in Kebbi, Kano, and the Federal Capital Territory.

Malami, alongside his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and his wife, Bashir Asabe, faces allegations of laundering ₦8,713,923,759.49. All defendants have pleaded not guilty. In a related suit, the EFCC is seeking the forfeiture of 57 properties suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

Additionally, Malami and his son are facing trial before Justice Abdulmalik on a separate five-count charge involving terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms. Proceedings in the reassigned cases are set to commence on February 27.
