EFCC Reveals Former AGF’s Scheme To Divert Public Funds Through Multiple Accounts
A witness in the trial of former Acting Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku has revealed how he created numerous bank accounts to siphon public funds. During the proceedings on Friday, witness Eucharia Ezeobi, an employee at Zenith Bank, testified before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Ezeobi stated she opened four company accounts on behalf of contractors associated with the Federal Ministry of Defence.
Ezeobi, the EFCC’s first witness (PW1), identified the four companies as Temeeo Synergy Concept Limited, Turge Global Investment Limited, Laptev Bridge Limited, and Arafura Transnational Afro Limited.
Under questioning by EFCC counsel Ekene Iheanacho, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ezeobi explained that most withdrawals from these accounts were made in cash, indicating that the defendant benefitted from these transactions. Iheanacho submitted the account opening documents as evidence, which were accepted by Justice Omotosho and labeled as Exhibits PWB.
The EFCC’s second witness (PW2), Felix Nweke, introduced himself as a director at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation. Nweke revealed that he served as the deputy director of finance at the Federal Ministry of Defence from 2018 to 2020, working closely with Nwabuoku.
Nweke testified that the defendant instructed him to open company accounts to facilitate access to funds. He mentioned reaching out to Gideon Joseph, a resource person at the ministry, who directed them to establish accounts with Zenith Bank. Nweke recounted meeting Ezeobi at the bank, where she assisted in opening the necessary accounts, stating that he routinely followed instructions from the director to initiate funding transfers.
During cross-examination, Nweke noted that the ministry’s budget was determined by the Appropriation Bill signed by the President. He acknowledged that while Anamekwe was not an approving officer, he acted as a conduit for fund authorization releases.
