El-Rufai’s Wife Says Polygamy Was Never Her Choice

According to reports, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, the first wife of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that entering a polygamous marriage was not part of her original plan.

Speaking on social media, Mrs. El-Rufai, who grew up in a monogamous household, revealed that polygamy was never discussed prior to her marriage. She said she gradually came to accept the arrangement after her husband, who was raised in a polygamous family, decided to take additional wives.

The former First Lady explained that she had hoped for a monogamous life, but ultimately chose to remain in the marriage. She noted that Islamic law allows a woman to leave a marriage without giving a reason, provided she returns the dowry, joking that by the time her marriage became polygamous, she had already spent hers.

Reflecting on her experience, Mrs. El-Rufai highlighted some benefits of being the first wife in a polygamous setup. She noted that it affords more time for personal pursuits, career, and her children, and that sharing responsibilities with co-wives can reduce family pressure and in-law conflicts. However, she added that she sees no clear advantages for men in polygamous marriages and encouraged individuals to make choices that suit their circumstances.

Nasir El-Rufai has three wives: Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, Asia Ahmad El-Rufai, and Aisha Ummi Garba El-Rufai.
