According to reports from Ireporter Online, Nigeria has lost one of its most celebrated live band icons, Akinloye Tofowomo, widely known by his stage name, Akiin Shuga. The renowned musician and founder of the celebrated Shuga Band passed away on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.

In a statement released by his family on Monday, they described Akiin Shuga as a towering figure whose artistry and influence reshaped Nigeria’s live music culture for more than three decades. “Akinloye Tofowomo was more than a musician; he was a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” the family’s statement read, emphasizing his role as both an inspiration and an institution within the Nigerian entertainment landscape.

The family expressed gratitude to friends, fans, and colleagues who have offered their condolences, while requesting privacy as they grieve. They assured that details of his memorial arrangements would be announced soon, noting that his legacy through the Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment “will continue to live on.”

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s life was defined by resilience and triumph. Despite being struck by polio at the age of five, he rose to become one of Nigeria’s most revered performers and entertainment entrepreneurs. His passion for music birthed the Shuga Band in 1998, which began performing at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos, before growing into a 14-member ensemble renowned for electrifying performances at weddings, corporate functions, and state events.

Through Shuga Entertainment, Akiin Shuga established a brand synonymous with excellence, discipline, and innovation. Under his leadership, the Shuga Band became a benchmark for live performances, blending multiple music genres while raising the standards for corporate and social entertainment in Nigeria.

Akiin Shuga also played a key leadership role as the founding president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), where he championed professionalism, fair treatment, and better welfare for musicians nationwide.
