Ex-Army Chief Recommends Compulsory Military Training For Nigerians

A former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), has called for the introduction of compulsory military training for all Nigerians, starting with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Ihejirika argued that such training would foster national unity, discipline, and resilience, especially given the rising security and social challenges facing the country.

Naija News reports that he made this recommendation on Friday night during the 50th anniversary dinner of the Nigerian Defence Academy Regular Course 18 Alumni Association in Abuja.

Reflecting on his early days in military service, Ihejirika spoke of the strong bonds and sense of unity built among officers during training.

“The discipline and patriotism instilled in us back then shaped our careers and how we served the nation,” he said.

Pointing to Nigeria’s current climate, Ihejirika said it was time to consider compulsory military exposure.

“We can begin with the NYSC. This will help us nurture a generation that understands sacrifice, responsibility, and true patriotism,” he urged.

Old National Anthem Should Be More Than Fanfare

Ihejirika also praised the government’s decision to reinstate the old national anthem, highlighting the line, “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand,” as a vital reminder of unity.

He, however, cautioned against reducing the anthem to mere ceremony.

“It should be a daily reminder of our pledge to the country. It must return to our schools, communities, and national events in a way that commands respect,” he said.

Sharing his personal story, Ihejirika recalled how military discipline transformed his life from humble beginnings in his Abia village, crediting his rise to Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff to mentors and supportive colleagues.

He applauded the current military leadership, noting that many had earned their ranks through years of real battlefield engagements in places like Liberia and Sierra Leone.

“These officers have seen combat and are doing exceptionally well,” he said.

Ihejirika also urged Nigerian leaders to prioritise peace and stability, warning that without unity, no office or ambition could stand.

“Unity remains the foundation of our nation’s progress,” he said.

The event was attended by top dignitaries, including the Minister of State for Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, and representatives of various service chiefs. It served as a moment for the alumni to reflect on how military service continues to shape Nigeria’s future.
