Fear Grips Niger As Bandits Seize Control Of Key Military Camp And Surrounding Communities

The occupation has forced at least 23 nearby communities to evacuate. This training ground, among the largest in Nigeria, now hosts multiple camps set up by the armed groups.

During a plenary session, Abdullah Isah, a state House of Assembly member representing Kontagora II, brought forth a motion of urgent public importance, highlighting that the military camp spans into Mariga Local Government Area and is fully occupied by bandits.

The Assembly urged the state government to collaborate with military authorities to reclaim the camp and restore security to the affected communities in Kontagora and Mariga LGAs. Abdullah noted that residents have been subjected to relentless attacks, with some community members currently held hostage.

The Assembly also called for an upgrade in military equipment and logistics to support the ongoing efforts in regaining control of the area, which has left displaced residents—primarily farmers—without their ancestral lands and livelihoods.
