Fed Govt Rolls Out Joint Screening System To Boost Airport Security

According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Government has mandated the implementation of a one-stop joint-interest screening system to strengthen security across Nigerian airports. The Acting Regional Manager for the Northcentral region of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Ahmadu Danjuma, disclosed this in an interview in Abuja.

Danjuma stated that the directive, issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser, aims to prevent unauthorized access to airports by herdsmen and criminal elements. The one-stop joint-interest screening system centralizes the screening process, allowing multiple agencies to jointly examine passengers, cargo, and staff in a single operation. This approach enhances efficiency, reduces duplication, and improves overall security by integrating immigration, customs, and security checks.

The FAAN official highlighted that additional security measures have been deployed, including increased personnel, enhanced surveillance, and the installation of advanced equipment such as X-ray and L3 scanning machines at major airports. He emphasized regular perimeter patrols and coordinated rounds with other security agencies to maintain safety.

Danjuma further assured the public that, despite the busy festival periods, there have been no significant security breaches at Abuja and other airports this year. FAAN has also prioritized perimeter security, intelligence gathering, and the deployment of modern technology, alongside ongoing training and capacity building for personnel to meet international standards.

In a bid to further strengthen aviation security, the government has authorized aviation security personnel to carry arms. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has mandated that all aviation security officers complete the Basic STP123 AVSEC course, which equips them with knowledge and skills in threat identification, passenger and cargo screening, emergency response, and coordination with other agencies.

Danjuma stated that these measures underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining safe, secure, and efficient airport operations nationwide, assuring passengers of continued safety and improved service.
