Representing the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, the acting Zonal Mines Officer, Mr Kutman Ali, underscored the critical importance of adhering to proper licensing procedures. He urged mining operators to obtain a permit following the issuance of their mining license, emphasizing that the permit would serve as an introduction to state and local governments and communities, ensuring smoother mining activities.

During the meeting, Alake disclosed a substantial financial burden, with miners and operators collectively owing the Federal Government over N2 trillion nationwide, with Kaduna State alone accumulating a debt surpassing N300 billion. Operators in the state were urged to promptly settle their outstanding debts.

The gathering also served as a platform to outline the minister’s plans for the mining sector in 2024 and beyond. The revitalization of the Special Mines Surveillance Taskforce (SMSTF) was emphasized to combat illegal mining and ensure the timely payment of royalties and taxes. The SMSTF, composed of members from the Nigerian Army, Police, Civil Defence Corps, DSS, EFCC, and the Nigeria Immigration Service, will be led by Mines Officers at the state level.

Alake clarified that state and local governments were not authorized to collect royalties or taxes on mining activities. Any grievances in this regard were advised to be reported to the nearest mines office for appropriate action.

In response, Mr Ado Dogo, Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Kaduna State branch, emphasized the need for enhanced communication between miners and regulators to address ongoing challenges. Dogo expressed concerns about interference by some state governors in mining activities and called for the minister’s intervention to ensure adherence to constitutional jurisdictions.
