Former Aviation Minister, Sirika ‘In Trouble’ Over Ill-Fated Nigeria Air Project (WHAT HAPPENED)

The House of Representatives has instructed its Aviation Committee to summon the immediate past Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, to present information on the status of the proposed national carrier, Nigeria Air, at the time of his departure from office.

The former minister is anticipated to shed light on various controversies surrounding the project.

This decision follows the endorsement of a motion put forward by Tarkighir Dickson during Thursday’s plenary session.

In his presentation, Dickson highlighted that the former minister, in 2016, outlined an aviation roadmap featuring the national carrier as the flagship project, committing to completing it by the end of the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The lawmaker further disclosed that shortly before the handover, the ex-minister engaged Ethiopian Airlines to provide an aircraft for Nigeria Air, which could be made accessible to Nigerians.

Additionally, he noted that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had issued an Air Transport License to Nigeria Air.

Dickson added, “The last administration spent billions of naira ostensibly to acquire the said new national carrier but the status of the project remains unclear, regardless of billions of taxpayers’ funds utilised on the project.

“If the negative trend is not investigated, it may lead to issues with accountability and continue to be a recurring expenditure item in the federal budget.”

The motion was approved by the House, instructing the committee to summon the NCAA for a briefing on the Nigeria Air project, including details about its certification.

In September, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, took the decision to suspend both the Nigeria Air project and the proposed concessioning of certain airports.
