France Outlast D’Tigress 93-86, Keep Perfect World Cup Qualifier Run

According to Ireporter Online, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, fell 93-86 to France on Sunday in their FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament clash in Villeurbanne. The hosts maintained their unbeaten record in the competition, fending off a late Nigerian rally that threatened to overturn the result.

France, ranked third globally, established dominance early, shooting with precision in the opening quarter and capitalizing on fast breaks to take a 27-15 lead after the first 10 minutes. Nigeria struggled to convert around the basket, making only 44 per cent of their two-point attempts, while France hit an impressive 80 per cent.

The D’Tigress regrouped in the second quarter despite disruptions from fouls. Veteran guard Ezinne Kalu led Nigeria’s fightback, scoring eight points to narrow the gap. However, France remained sharp from long range, with Janelle Salaun and Gabby Williams combining to punish Nigeria’s defense beyond the arc. By halftime, France had converted nine of their first 13 three-point attempts, giving them a 57-45 lead at the break.

Nigeria came out stronger in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 57-50 and forcing a timeout from French coach Jean-Aime Toupane. Marine Johannes responded immediately for France with a crucial three-pointer. Early in the fourth quarter, Nigeria reduced the margin to just two points at 76-74, sparking hopes of a comeback. France regained control through Pauline Astier’s defensive interception, which led to a basket by Romane Bernies.

The match remained tightly contested in the final minutes, but Nigeria could not level the score, and France held on for a 93-86 victory.

The D’Tigress had already secured qualification for the 2026 Women’s World Cup after winning the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket title, making the tournament primarily a preparation exercise for the global championship. The loss leaves Nigeria with two wins and two defeats from four games in Villeurbanne. They will conclude their campaign against Germany on Tuesday, while France face South Korea to determine the group’s final standings.
