Gabon Blocks Social Media Amid Claims Of Fake News And Hateful Content
Gabon’s media regulator announced on Tuesday the suspension of social media platforms across the country, citing the circulation of content that fuels division and conflict. According to Ireporter Online, the High Authority for Communication ordered the immediate shutdown of social media operations nationwide.
In a televised statement, the regulator’s spokesman, Jean-Claude Mendome, explained that the decision was prompted by the harmful effects of content shared online. He noted that “inappropriate, defamatory, hateful, and insulting content” has undermined human dignity, public morality, citizens’ honor, social cohesion, institutional stability, and national security.
The spokesman further highlighted the proliferation of false information, cyberbullying, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data as contributing factors. “These actions are likely, in the case of Gabon, to generate social conflict, destabilize the institutions of the Republic, and seriously jeopardize national unity, democratic progress, and achievements,” he said.
While the regulator did not specify which platforms were affected, it emphasized that freedom of expression remains protected under Gabonese law. The statement reiterated that “freedom of expression, including freedom of comment and criticism, is a fundamental right enshrined in Gabon.”
This move comes less than a year after the election of President Brice Oligui Nguema, as Gabon faces ongoing social unrest. Teachers initiated a nationwide strike in December over pay and working conditions, with protests spreading to other public sectors including health, higher education, and broadcasting. Civil servants in several sectors have also threatened industrial action, raising concerns over stability and governance in the country.
