Galadima Rejects Calls For State Creation, Says Nigeria Needs Electoral Reforms

Prominent New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chieftain, Buba Galadima, has dismissed renewed calls for the creation of more states and constitutional restructuring, describing them as distractions from Nigeria’s core challenges.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television on Friday, Galadima argued that Nigeria’s real problem is not its constitution, but the attitude of its leaders and institutions towards governance.

“There is no need to amend any constitution. Let them follow what is there. The real issue is attitudinal change,” he said, adding that state creation has often been more about political or ethnic appeasement than genuine development.

He further criticized the legislature for allegedly focusing on budget allocations, saying, “If they are only interested in taking money from the budget, let them share it and leave us as we are. They should instead use the National Orientation Agency to change Nigerians’ attitude towards governance.”

Highlighting what he believes should be the national priority, Galadima stressed the need for comprehensive electoral reforms to ensure that votes truly count.

“It is electoral reform that we need, and that doesn’t require any constitutional amendment. The existing electoral laws are sufficient if properly implemented,” he noted.

Galadima urged politicians across party lines to unite and push for reforms that would strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system. He also suggested engaging influential foreign voices, saying, “I’m not advocating that Nigeria becomes a colony of Britain or America, but it’s only these countries that our leaders fear and scamper for cover when they speak.”
