The German Government has said it will back the establishment of a German-West African Centre for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention in Ghana.

“Excellent news: Germany Flag of Germany will support [the] launch of a new “German-West African Center for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention,” the German ambassador to Ghana, Christoph Retzlaff, tweeted on his official handle on Thursday evening. “It will be located in Ghana and be part of 8 new centres worldwide to fight global challenges.”

Germany’s recent move comes less than a week after social media giant, Twitter said it will set up its African base in the country.

“Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana,” the social media giant noted in a blog post published on Monday evening while reiterating its commitment to invest in talents whenever it enters new markets.

“To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.”

Twitter explained that its decision was based on Ghana being “a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.”

The decision from the company sparked debates online with users of the microblogging platform saying the development is an indictment on the Nigerian government.

They argued that things were working perfectly, the country’s population should be enticing enough for the technology firm to locate its base in Nigeria.

But the Federal Government blamed unpatriotic Nigerians for Twitter’s choice, arguing that the country was demarketed by the same persons.

“The reasons cited by Twitter for citing the headquarters in Accra, Ghana is that Accra is a champion of democracy and there is rule of law in the country, among other reasons. This is what you get when you de-market your country,” the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

A spiritual leader and founder of One Love Family, Sat Guru Maharaji says he is solidly behind the agitation of the Oduduwa nation as championed by a freedom fighter, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

This was revealed when Sunday Igboho paid a courtesy visit to the Maharaji religious village situated in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.

In a viral video, as reported by the BBC Yoruba, Igboho commended Maharaji for throwing his weight behind the agitation of the Oduduwa nation which has gained prominence recently.

Igboho also urged Maharaji to publicly declare his support for the emancipation of the sovereign Yoruba nation, adding that Yoruba youths need his encouragement.

Reacting, Maharaji said all gods and oracles in Yorubaland stand with Igboho on his position on self-determination of Yoruba nation.

“All Sunday Igboho’s services and activities are geared towards preventing the fall and annihilation of the Yoruba race, and I’m certain that all gods in the land are with him.

“And he’s doing what is necessary to achieve this, so that there won’t be trouble, because I can tell you that the Yoruba political leaders are incapacitated by this agitation.

“We are not angry with other tribes, but we can’t be here suffering hunger and other injustices meted out to us. We cannot say our fortune and comfort are in heaven, we have to liberate ourselves while we are still here on earth,” Maharaji said.

The religious leader appealed to people to give their support to Igboho.

Maharaji also called on South-West governors to have the interest of Oduduwa agitators in their agenda, stressing that they should not expose them to any danger.

“Give them operational vehicles to facilitate the agitation. This is how the United States, Japan and other developing countries support their human rights activists. When they see truthful people, they support them. Don’t be frightened. Oduduwa is here,” Maharaji added.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yoyo State has intercepted baked cakes made with cannabis sativa on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The NDLEA Commander, Mrs Josephine Obi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ibadan.

“We also arrested a delivery man who was in possession of a birthday cake infused with 1.2kg of Cannabis Sativa.

”The continuous attempt by illicit drug traffickers to outwit anti-drug agency through evil creativity is increasing at an alarming rate in different states of the country.

“The emergence of clandestine production of drugged cookies or cakes among the youths is at an alarming rate as this was uncovered by some state commands of the NDLEA formations in the country.

“The cookies or cakes were baked with Arizona weed, a highly psychoactive variant of the marijuana family, Rohypnol and alcohol among other ingredients such as yeast, butter, flour, sugar, milk and chocolates.

“The product is already in supermarkets, clubs and schools, making children the most vulnerable.”

The state commander said that illicit drug traffickers were getting more creative to beat NDLEA’s operational dragnet.

Obi identified public disregard and lack of awareness of the awful consequences of drug abuse as reasons for the unrestricted access to illicit drugs and psychotropic substances among the youths.

“The way people have been disregarding the drug problem and epidemic in our society has made youths to embrace it even more.

“It is not surprising that the youths keep on finding new ways and means to use and trafficked hard drugs.

“Everyone should be extra vigilant. There is nothing these young people cannot adulterate with hard drugs, and they offer these to their mates without their knowing, ” she said.

She appealed to the residents of the state to support NDLEA in the war against drug trafficking, abuse and addiction in order to stem the tide of the drug use epidemic in the state.

“As NDLEA battles to get illicit drug dealers, all hands have to be on deck to stop the menace of drug abuse in the state.

“Some years back no one would have thought things would degenerate to this level.

“The command will leave no stone unturned to get to the manufacturer of these illicit drug-infused cookies and cakes.

“We are also going to scale up our drug abuse sensitisation exercises even on the new means of disturbing these illicit and psychotropic drugs,” she said.

After finding a phone number on social media, he contacted the accused, who told him to pay Rs 16,000 for an oxygen cylinder and Rs 4,000 as a transportation charge. The complainant transferred Rs 20,000 to their account, officials said.

The accused assured him that the cylinder would reach his address. However, the victim did not receive any cylinder and when he tried to contact the accused, they blocked his number, a senior police officer said.

During interrogation, Benneth told the police that he and his associates in India and abroad were cheating people via different modes.

After seeing the rising demand for oxygen cylinders in Delhi, they planned to cheat people via this mode. They flashed their mobile numbers on different social media platforms, promising to provide oxygen cylinders to needy people, police said.

The accused disclosed that he collected phone numbers of the needy people from social media and, along with his associates and started sending messages to them regarding the availability of oxygen cylinders, they said.

One of his associates in Bangalore provided the bank accounts to receive the money. After withdrawing the money, their share was deposited in their respective bank accounts. Their other associates in Africa also assisted in this fraud, Indian Telegraph reports.
