Gov Sule Doubts Obi’s Promise, Cites Relentless Pressure Of Power

The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has reacted to Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected in 2027, warning that the political realities of Nigeria make such promises difficult to keep, according to IReporter Online.

Obi has repeatedly stated his willingness to be a one-term president,  Sule urged Obi and other aspirants not to underestimate the complexities of governance in Nigeria.

He explained that while a president may set out with the intention to serve just four years, the weight of office and entrenched political interests often make it nearly impossible to solve even a fraction of the nation’s challenges within that time frame, according to IReporter Online.

“Peter Obi might say he wants to do one term, but it is not up to him,” Sule said. “Once he assumes office, powerful interests will pressure him—telling him ‘it’s our turn,’ ‘you cannot do that to us,’ or even threatening legal action.”

Sule also assessed the current administration, commending President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to stabilize the economy and improve security. He noted the government’s reported boost of foreign reserves to about $40 billion and an increase in oil production from roughly 1.1 million to 1.8 million barrels per day.

However, he acknowledged that insecurity remains a serious concern and called on governors and local government chairmen to use improved revenues to alleviate the hardship Nigerians face, according to IReporter Online.
