Julius Berger Clinches Top Honour for Sustainable Construction Excellence

Engineering powerhouse Julius Berger Nigeria PLC has been awarded the inaugural Leadership in Sustainable Construction Award, an honour bestowed by the American Society of Engineers (ASCE) through its Sustainable Infrastructure Recognition Awards (SIRA) platform.

This recognition was announced during the 2025 Sustainable Infrastructure Conference held in Lagos, where stakeholders from across the globe gathered to spotlight achievements in climate-resilient and innovation-driven infrastructure.

According to iReporter Online, the SIRA initiative stands as Nigeria’s premier award platform dedicated to celebrating transformative contributions in sustainable engineering and infrastructure. It commends individuals, organizations, and groundbreaking projects that demonstrate bold leadership in climate-conscious infrastructure development.

Julius Berger’s cutting-edge practices, particularly the Bitumen Stabilised Materials (BSM) innovation utilized on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project, were highlighted as a benchmark in sustainable construction.

ASCE emphasized that the award represents a shift “from construction to conscience,” applauding the company for prioritizing environmentally responsible solutions.

According to iReporter Online, the ASCE’s Nigeria Section President, Austin Odibi, praised Julius Berger’s novel BSM approach, stating it heralds a new era in Nigerian construction.

Additionally, ASCE Executive Director Tom Smith hailed the innovation as globally relevant, recommending the BSM technology for international adoption, including in the United States.

Academic expert Dr Abdulmuminu Ahmed Shauibu from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, presented a detailed case study evaluating the tensile strength and compressive durability of the BSM solution.

He concluded that the method offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to conventional construction, minimizing ecosystem disruption by reusing distressed pavement materials—a major win for sustainable engineering.

In his remarks, Alhaji Abdulaziz Kaita, Director of Administration at Julius Berger, expressed gratitude for the honour and reiterated the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability.

He noted that Julius Berger’s efforts align with Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 13 (Industry Innovation and Climate Action), particularly through low-emission, energy-efficient methods.

According to iReporter Online, Kaita further disclosed that collaboration with Ahmadu Bello University on BSM development is ongoing, and that Julius Berger’s impact in the built environment extends far beyond a single technology.

He reaffirmed the company’s position as a leader in redefining infrastructure delivery in Nigeria.

Among the Julius Berger team at the ceremony were Fatima Kosemani (Project Coordinator, Region West), Mobolaji Ogunyemi, Mercy Akposheri, Emmanuel Isibor, and the firm’s Media Relations Office representatives—all present to celebrate the milestone.
