Hell on Earth: Inside the Deadly Southeast Forest Where Victims Are Tortured and Killed Like Chickens
Kidnappings in Nigeria’s Southeast region have become a terrifyingly common occurrence, with reports of abductions happening almost weekly across the five states. The situation has grown so dire that those who have survived the ordeal describe the experience as nothing short of “hell on earth.”
One such victim, recently freed from the infamous Lilu forest, shared a harrowing account of what life is like inside this nightmare. The forest, he revealed, is a place of unimaginable horror. Victims are killed without hesitation, their lives ended as easily as one would slaughter a chicken. The kidnappers are said to use a combination of drugs and charms to control their captives, creating an environment where fear and desperation reign supreme.
The victim also shed light on a disturbing aspect of the operation—the involvement of women. According to his account, these women deliver cooked food to the kidnappers as a form of payment. They enter the forest regularly, complicit in the ongoing terror. Meanwhile, the captives endure relentless torture. Their screams are recorded and sent to their families in a cruel attempt to expedite ransom payments. This chilling tactic serves as a constant reminder to the loved ones of the victims that time is running out.
“In that forest, people are killed like chickens,” the victim recounted with a tremor in his voice. “Charms and various types of hard drugs are freely used. Women bring cooked food into the forest and are paid. The victims are constantly tortured, and their cries are put on the speaker of mobile phones to get family members to pay ransom on them.”
The victim’s story is a stark reminder of the brutal reality faced by many in the Southeast region of Nigeria. It highlights the urgent need for intervention and the restoration of safety in these communities. As the kidnappings continue, the cries for help grow louder, echoing from the depths of a forest where human lives are treated with shocking disregard.
