The 66-year-old leader defeated the ruling party’s candidate amidst growing public discontent over economic struggles worsened by Ghana’s 2022 sovereign debt default.

Mahama earned 56.6% of the vote, a significant margin in a country where political contests are typically closely contested.

Notably, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was present at Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony, marking a symbol of regional unity. Additionally, several governors from Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) visited Mahama ahead of the inauguration. These included Delta State’s Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Adamawa’s Ahmadu Fintiri, Zamfara’s Dauda Lawal, Taraba’s Agbu Kefas, and Plateau’s Caleb Mutfwang.
