I Chose Not To Back Obi – Wike Drops Political Bomb In Shocking Revelation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained why he declined to support Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike dismissed Obi’s presidential ambition as unrealistic, labeling him a “social media candidate.”
“He had no chance of winning,” Wike stated. “I don’t align with candidates who are only popular online. I don’t support social media politicians.”
Wike, who served as Governor of Rivers State until 2023, emphasized that his political choices are guided by strategic analysis and a candidate’s electoral viability—not internet buzz.
“As a politician, I analyze the chances of every candidate. I back the one I believe can actually win,” he explained.
He further stressed that winning elections in Nigeria goes beyond having credentials or social media clout, pointing to the complex dynamics at play.
“In our politics, being the ‘best’ candidate doesn’t always translate to victory. There are many influencing factors,” he noted.
Wike also pointed to the tough environment surrounding the 2023 polls, including the controversial naira redesign policy and widespread fuel scarcity.
“It was a turbulent time for Tinubu to even contest,” he said. “Remember, it was still a party in power, yet these harsh policies were implemented right before the election.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu for navigating those hurdles successfully.
“No ruling party would typically introduce such policies during an election season,” Wike observed. “But despite it all, he pulled through.”
Wike concluded by hailing Tinubu’s political skill and tenacity in overcoming the odds stacked against him.
