According to Ireporter Online, Nigerian Afro-pop sensation Yemi Alade has shared a personal story about her brief struggle with cigarette addiction during her university years.

The “Oh My Gosh” crooner opened up during a candid conversation with media personality Chude, revealing that she began smoking as a teenager but quickly realised it was taking a toll on her health and vocal strength.

Alade explained that what initially started as casual experimentation gradually turned into a nightly habit, as she found herself needing to smoke before going to bed. Despite maintaining a public image that concealed the habit, she admitted feeling uncomfortable with her growing dependence.

Reflecting on the experience, the award-winning artist said she made a conscious decision to quit after realising that smoking not only affected her wellbeing but also strained her singing voice. She emphasised that the habit lasted less than a year before she completely gave it up, opting instead for self-discipline and self-awareness.

In her words, “When I was in the university, I tried smoking. It didn’t work out. Before it stopped working out, I started needing to smoke before I went to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle, but I would hide it in public. One day I asked myself why I was doing something I had to hide. I decided that if I have to hide it, it’s not for me.”

Alade further revealed that the habit left a negative impact on her voice, prompting her final decision to quit for good. She described the experience as a valuable lesson that reinforced her commitment to healthier choices and personal awareness.
