INEC Begins Ekiti 2026 Election Process, Vows Transparency and Compliance

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially begun preparations for the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, issuing a formal notice on Wednesday to kick off the electoral process.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Ado-Ekiti, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and credible election, in line with the Electoral Act. He emphasized the commission’s dedication to maintaining integrity throughout the pre-election, election, and post-election phases.

Omoseyindemi noted that the issuance of the notice aligns with the statutory requirement that mandates INEC to notify the public at least 360 days before the scheduled election date. The 2026 Ekiti governorship election is set for July 20.

He called on political parties to strictly observe guidelines related to primaries, candidate nominations, and campaigns, urging them to respect the electoral framework to ensure a peaceful process.

“This meeting is symbolic and strategic,” Omoseyindemi stated. “It marks the beginning of a journey toward a credible electoral exercise and provides a platform to collaborate with political parties, the media, and civil society.”

He added that the timetable and schedule of activities for both the Ekiti and Osun elections, approved by INEC on May 30, would be released immediately following the meeting. The tenure of the current governors in both states expires next year.

The REC also charged the media to practice responsible journalism and maintain neutrality throughout the process. He pledged that INEC would work diligently to uphold public trust.

Speaking on behalf of the political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council Chairman in Ekiti State, Daramola Owoola, praised the commission for its early engagement. He expressed optimism that INEC’s proactive steps would lead to a smooth, transparent, and credible election.

“We are ready to work in unity for a peaceful poll. INEC has demonstrated transparency, and we will play our part to ensure a successful electoral process,” Owoola said.
