Barely two days after a petroleum tanker fire caused the deaths of at least 12 persons in Oshugbudu rural town of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue, the state has recorded yet another tanker explosion.

A tanker went up in flames, still in Oshugbudu, in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving some houses burnt.

Our correspondent gathered that the fresh incident happened close to a police station.

Vice Chairman of Agatu LGA, John Ikwulono, told our correspondent that no life was lost in the latest incident.

“But several houses were burnt. Though we are not yet certain about the numbers of buildings affected, however, they are not as many as the incident on Sunday.

“We are glad that no life was lost. The driver of the vehicle ran away but his conductor was arrested and handed over to police. I’m told that the tanker fully loaded with fuel fell and caught fire between 4:00am and 5:00am,” Ikwulono narrated.

But the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Benue State confirmed only two buildings burnt in the fresh tanker explosion in Agatu.

Sector Corps Commander, Yakubu Mohammed, in a text message to our correspondent, stated, “Yes, a tanker lost control and crashed where it burnt two (2) buildings near Oshugbudu in early hours of this morning (Tuesday). Our personnel have rescued the two persons involved no loss of life or injury. The obstruction has been cleared motorists are moving freely now.”

Ogun State governor Tuesday suspended his aide Abidemi Rufai, who was arrested in the United States on Friday for suspected wire fraud.

“Our position is that the law should take its course,” said Kunle Somorin, the chief press secretary to Govenor Dapo Abiodun. ““Meanwhile, the governor has ordered his immediate suspension from office to answer charges against him.”

The newspaper said Rufai was suspended immediately the governor was briefed about his arrest.

Rufai, the founder and chief executive of Ecobet, was accused of stealing the identities of 100 residents of Washington to file fraudulent unemployment claims between March and August 2020.

He was also fingered in similar fraud scheme in Hawaii, Wyoming, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, and Pennsylvania. He faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty of fraud relating to benefits paid in connection with a presidentially declared disaster or emergency.

Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman accused Rufai of using an alias, Sandy Tang, to steal over $350,000 in unemployment benefits from the Washington State Employment Security Department.

“Since the first fraud reports to our office in April 2020, we have worked diligently with a federal law enforcement team to track down the criminals who stole funds designated for pandemic relief,” said Gorman.

“This is the first, but will not be the last, significant arrest in our ongoing investigation of ESD fraud.”

The proceeds of his fraudulent claims were paid out to online payment accounts such as ‘Green Dot’ accounts, or wired to bank accounts controlled by “money mules.”

Some of the proceeds were then mailed to the Jamaica, New York address of Rufai’s relative. Law enforcement determined said more than $288,000 was deposited into an American bank account controlled by Rufai between March and August 2020.

“Greed is a powerful motivator. Unfortunately, the greed alleged to this defendant affects all taxpayers,” said Donald Voiret, Special Agent in Charge FBI Seattle.

Trouble As Plot To Remove Senate President, Ahmed Lawan Thickens

The plot to remove Senate President, Ahmed Lawan is gaining momentum in the National Assembly, POLITICS NIGERIA has gathered.

Hon. Sergius Ogun, a member of the house of Representatives(North-East/Esan South-East constituency of Edo state) was first to hint that all was not well in the hallowed chambers. He appeared on ‘The Morning Show,’ a programme on ARISE NEWS Channel, revealing that plans were underway to oust Lawan.

He disclosed that Lawan may be removed from office this week after he criticised Southern governors over their resolution to ban Open grazing. In his words;

“We are in the process of reviewing the constitution and the chairman of the National Assembly (Lawan) is rebuking, chastising the governors for saying that they should restructure the country. So, if you ask me, any right-thinking person will believe that the process is dead on arrival. He doesn’t believe in it; why would he talk like that?”

“For him really to be talking to governors representing a section of the country like that, he’s not fit to be the Senate president and I strongly believe that the senators from the South will do something about it this week.”

“We are even talking about impeachment? Who is the leader? The Chairman of the National Assembly. If we are going to start any process of impeachment of the president, who is going to superintend over that? The same man we are talking about. I think he should go and I am sure the process has started.”

Fresh information emerging on Monday night revealed some North-west senators are already mobilizing their colleagues from the North-central for a possible onslaught on Lawan.

Among other reasons for the opposition against Lawan include allegations of Sluggishness in approving funds, ‘tight-fistedness’ and his unbridled support for President Buhari.

If Lawan is shoved aside, the position may move to the North-west zone, which has the highest number of senators.
