Just In : Federal Government and Labour Unions Reach Key Resolutions Amid Nationwide Strike

Abuja, Nigeria – June 3, 2024: Significant resolutions have been reached following a critical meeting held today between the Federal Government and the Organised Labour. This meeting, convened at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was aimed at resolving the nationwide strike action declared by the Organised Labour to demand an agreeable National Minimum Wage (NMW).

The strike, which commenced on June 3rd, 2024, came after the Organised Labour withdrew from the negotiation by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage. The Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on June 2nd, setting the stage for today’s crucial deliberations.

After extensive discussions, the following key resolutions were agreed upon:

1. Commitment to a Higher National Minimum Wage:
   • The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, has committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000.
2. Daily Meetings of the Tripartite Committee:
   • The Tripartite Committee will convene every day for the next week with the objective of arriving at a mutually agreeable National Minimum Wage.
3. Labour’s Consideration of Presidential Commitment:
   • In light of the President’s commitment, the Organised Labour will immediately convene a meeting of its organs to consider this commitment.
4. Protection Against Victimization:
   • No worker will be victimized as a result of participating in the industrial action.
