Just In: Minister Calls For Precautionary-Measures Against Cholera-Outbreak In FCT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, has urged the FCT Primary Health Care Board to implement precautionary measures to prevent a cholera outbreak, which has affected several states in Nigeria.

During a briefing with the Director of the FCT Primary Health Care Board at the 190th FCT Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting, Mahmoud expressed satisfaction that no cholera cases have been reported in the nation’s capital but emphasized the importance of staying vigilant.

“I am indeed delighted that no case of the cholera epidemic has been reported in any of our primary healthcare centres across the six area councils in the FCT. However, that does not give us room to relax because this is the seat of government. The FCT Primary Health Care Board should put in place measures to guard against any outbreak of the disease,” Mahmoud stated.

She also recommended the commencement of radio jingles in major languages and sensitization programs in schools, markets, mosques, and churches to prevent any outbreak before it starts.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has disbursed N3,624,968,091.61 to the six area councils and other stakeholders as the statutory allocation for May 2024. The breakdown includes N1,138,534,925.64 for the area councils and N2,486,433,165.97 for other stakeholders, including primary school teachers and pension funds.

The JAAC meeting included key officials such as the Mandate Secretary Area Council Services Secretariat, Hon. Bitrus Garki, Permanent Secretary Area Council Services Secretariat, Dr. Olusa Olusegun, and Commissioner representing FCT in the Revenue Mobilization Fiscal Allocation Commission, Hon. Ismail Agaka.
