Kano Assembly Moves To Make Hausa Language Compulsory In Schools
The Kano State House of Assembly has taken a significant legislative step toward promoting indigenous language learning through the introduction of a bill mandating the use of the mother tongue—specifically the Hausa language—as the medium of instruction in schools across the state.
According to Ireporter Online, the proposed law, titled Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill, was sponsored by Hon. Musa Kachako (NNPP–Takai). Presenting the bill during plenary, Kachako stated that the initiative aligns with global educational standards, noting that countries such as China, Japan, and India have recorded tremendous achievements in science and technology through the early adoption of their native languages as the foundation of learning.
He emphasized that integrating Hausa as the main instructional language would enhance comprehension, reduce failure rates, minimize school dropouts, and preserve cultural heritage. Kachako added that the policy would also foster inclusivity in education and make technical subjects more accessible to pupils.
Following deliberations, the Assembly referred the bill to its Standing Committee on Education for further review and recommendations.
In a related development, another lawmaker, Malam Zakariyya Nuhu (NNPP–Gabasawa), presented a motion calling for the establishment of a College of Agriculture in Gabasawa. He explained that the institution would advance agricultural education and strengthen the local economy, given that over 60 percent of residents in the constituency are engaged in farming.
Meanwhile, the Assembly also received a letter from the state executive seeking approval for the creation of a new Polytechnic in Gaya Local Government Area and the establishment of a Kano Local Governments Service Commission. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore, subsequently referred both proposals to the appropriate committees for legislative consideration.
