Kano Government Suspends Doctors Over Surgical Scissors Left In Patient’s Abdomen

In an official statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the management admitted that the incident was a case of medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano. The statement disclosed that a preliminary investigation, directed by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were mistakenly left inside the patient after a previous procedure.

The Board announced that, beyond the suspension of the affected personnel, the matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a comprehensive investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in line with professional ethics and existing laws.

Expressing sympathy, the Board conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that acts of negligence within the healthcare system would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Further details gathered by Ireporter Online revealed that a relative of the late Aishatu Umar, Abubakar Mohammed, had earlier explained that she suffered persistent abdominal pain for several months following a surgery conducted at the facility in September 2025. Despite multiple visits to the hospital and repeated complaints of worsening pain, she was reportedly given only pain-relief medication.

Mohammed stated that it was not until scans were eventually conducted days before her death that doctors discovered a pair of scissors had been left inside her body, leading to the decision for a corrective surgery that ultimately proved fatal.
