Kebbi Govt Fires Back: “Linking Us To Malami’s EFCC Case Is Wicked And Heartless

According to Ireporter Online, the Kebbi State Government has firmly rejected claims linking it to the ongoing investigation and detention of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, describing such allegations as malicious and unfounded.

Malami is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following an invitation extended to him on November 28 over matters related to the recovery of funds linked to the Abacha loot during his tenure as the nation’s chief law officer. After honouring the invitation, Malami disclosed that his interrogation was constructive and maintained that the allegations against him were fabricated.

He later returned to the anti-graft agency on December 8 but has remained in detention after reportedly failing to meet the conditions attached to his bail. Developments surrounding his case have since sparked speculation in some quarters that the investigation may be politically motivated, particularly amid recent exchanges between Malami and the Kebbi State Government over security-related concerns.

However, the Kebbi State Government has distanced itself completely from the matter. The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, stated that the administration has no role whatsoever in Malami’s encounter with the EFCC, noting that the issues surrounding the case predate the current government.

He explained that several petitions had been filed against the former minister long before now, especially around the time Malami declared his intention to contest the governorship of the state. According to him, the petitions did not originate from Kebbi State but were reportedly submitted from Abuja by individuals described as Malami’s colleagues.

Idris emphasized that any attempt to implicate the Kebbi State Government in the former justice minister’s ordeal was mischievous and deliberately misleading. He stressed that the state government neither initiated nor influenced the investigation and is not privy to the details of the case, adding that branding the administration as responsible is both wicked and heartless.
