Kogi Government Speaks On Money Laundering Allegation By EFCC

yahaya Bello

The Kogi State Government has refuted an allegation of money laundering made by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Kingsley Fanwo, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication In a statement issued on Thursday in Lokoja, the EFCC, led by Abdulrasheed Bawa, described the allegation as “sustenance” of the government’s persecution.

The commissioner’s response was in response to a press statement allegedly posted on the EFCC’s website claiming that they had arraigned some individuals suspected of laundering funds belonging to the Kogi State government.

The statement stated that the commission’s current allegations demonstrated that it was desperately trying to save its face after the commission’s N20 billion Sterling Bank media trial hit a snag.

The commissioner lamented that, in the case of the Sterling Bank scandal, the Commission went to the media before conducting a proper investigation, and that the EFCC was once again about to embarrass itself and its legacy by going to the media to continue its persecution of the Kogi government.

While insisting that no money belonging to the Kogi State Government was laundered, the Commissioner urged Nigerians to ask the EFCC if its “biased” corruption probe was limited to Kogi State.

The Commissioner stated that the EFCC was opposed to international organizations’ recognition of the Kogi State Government’s due process and financial accountability.

It emphasized the recent honor bestowed on the Kogi State Government by the World Bank-funded SFTAS project, which elevated Kogi above peers in financial accountability.
